Make that Inordinately-High-Protein 100% Bean Pasta. That tastes surprisingly F'ing delicious. Each serving of Explore Asian's bean pastas--available in black bean, soybean, adzuki bean, and edamame & mung bean varieties--has between 20 and 25 grams of protein per serving. That's 80 to 100 grams of protein in each 4-serving, 7-ounce bag. Oh, and also 40 to 60 grams of fiber. And I'm not kidding about the ingredient list; it reads as follows: organic [insert name of bean], water.

I'm not dairy- or gluten-free. I'm not a protein or fiber hoarder. And I'm not terrified of carbs. But I've eaten at least 5 bags of this bean cuisine now, and even I don't feel the need to eat normal, grain-based pasta ever again. I'm not saying you'll love bean pasta because I love it--and in fact, I hope you don't go buy it all up off of Amazon so I can't get it anymore--but here's how it won my heart:

  • It takes only 5 to 6 minutes to boil.
  • It never gets sticky or gummy. Even when I (and by I, I of course mean my girlfriend) take it out of the water and let it sit for awhile, or put the leftovers away naked in the fridge. It has the same texture and taste, cold or heated, the next day, and the next, and the next.
  • That texture and taste are mmmmmeaty! Not surprisingly, given the protein content. Explore Asian's bean pastas have a decidedly hearty, substantial chew to them. The flavor itself is like any other pasta--fairly unnoticeable, particularly once it's doused in sauce.
  • I'm actually full after eating 1 or 2 servings of it. Which means I escape dinner with 250 to 350 calories of "pasta" rather than 500+. Plenty of room for a pint of Halo Top for dessert!
  • The only real downside to Explore Asia's pasta--presuming you're a fan of its charms--is the cost, which is 1.5 to 2 times that of a normal box of pasta (given that a box of spaghetti typically has 8 servings.) But it's organic. And doing whatever the Jack & the Beanstalk it is they do to transform a pile of adzukis into long, glorious threads of quattro formaggio sauce holders probably takes more effort than mass mixing flour, eggs, and water.

The Explore Asian listing here is for an 8-bag sampler pack.
