Team up, build a hangout space, make connections, get in the Zome. The Zome Building Kit is a dynamic DIY shelter developed by Giant Grass, a design firm with a sweet name, and an even better purpose: exploring architectural sustainability through bamboo.
Zome Building Kits come with all the materials you'll need to erect the dome-style structure - namely, the 350 precision made bamboo strips and 126 nuts and bolts that form the Zome skeleton. Giant Grass says assembly is easy, requiring no special tools beyond a spanner to tighten the hardware, and a step ladder to reach the top as your creation grows. They estimate build time at between 2 and 4 hours with the help of 2 to 4 people, and even recommend it as a project for kids and parents, schoolchildren, and festival goers who only just met while they were all eating mushrooms.
Fine, maybe not the mushrooms part.
Completed Zomes are ready for add-ons and applications limited only by your imagination. Pin some breezy cloth over the geodesic openings to create shade for a pool cabana, backyard eating area, or yoga space. Weave in more bamboo or other flexible fibers to create a more enclosed space for outdoor restaurant dining, or camping (by which I mean glamping). Or move the Zome indoors - it weighs just 75 pounds - and let your kids use it as a playhouse.
At printing, Giant Grass was offering a Large, 3m diameter, 2.8m high Zome Building Kit, but they have 2 smaller versions, including a wee countertop-sized model you could use as a lampshade or cake dome, in the works.
