HummingBoard Mini ARM Computer
CuBox creators SolidRun have added the HummingBoard to their family of cleverly wordsmithed mini computers. Check out the video to see how this new kid compares to the incumbent credit card-sized computer, Raspberry Pi, and keep reading to learn how HummingBoard differentiates itself from its CuBox predecessor.
Starting at $45 and available in 3 models, the HummingBoard is a tiny, powerful, and low-cost computer whose technology is based on Israel-based SolidRun's Micro System on a Module (MicroSOMTM). This means it can be scaled from solo to quad core, and optionally incorporate WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity for maximal flexibility. It also comes loaded with ready-to-use OS images and open hardware containing full schematics and layout. HummingBoard can run most prevalent open source operating systems, including Ubuntu, Debian, and Arch, plus Android and XBMC.
The 3 models released with HummingBoard's debut scale up in power from the HB-i1 to the HB-i2 to the HB-i2ex. The HB-i1 had 512 MB of RAM, 2 USB ports, and a Fast Ethernet network port. It is powered by Freescale's i.MX6 SoC (system on chip) and includes a 1GHz ARM A9 core, video acceleration, and GPU engine capable of outputting 1080p video. The i1 HummingBoard also provides access to the computer's GPIO pins and CSI connector for direct connection to attachments such as expansion boards and cameras.
The HB-i2 and HB-i2eX each have 1GB of memory, and the latter is faster, with a more powerful GPU. The i2 is 64 bit and runs 1GB at 800Mbps with a GC880 GPU. The i2ex 64 bit and runs 1GB at 1066Mbps with a GC2000 GPU. The i2ex also has 2 additional internal USB ports, mini PCIe expansion, and LVDS interface for connecting to touchscreens.
The HummingBoard is a top Dude Gift for a Geek pick.
