Here's a digital servant for you. And the Ubi doesn't even need space to move or stand like Number 5 or the Small Wonder. The 4-1/2" x 4-1/2" box hangs on a wall or sits inconspicuously on a table, from where it can receive voice commands and complete tasks ranging from sending emails and reminders to others in the household to adjusting the thermostat and turning on the lights.
On its way to becoming as overused as the lower case "i", "OK", as in "OK Ubi", alerts the device that it's time to hop to. Once at attention, users supply a voice command for the Wi-Fi connected Ubi to follow. Examples include:
- "OK Ubi, send a text to Mama requesting homemade Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies and vanilla ice cream for dessert tonight."
- "OK Ubi, wake me up at 3 p.m. And don't let me snooze for more than an hour."
- "OK Ubi, take a note on this genius thought I'm having about a collard greens and BBQ pork sushi roll."
- "OK Ubi, tell me to take my definition of perfection son's Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies out of the oven in 12 minutes. And remind me in an hour to get him some vanilla ice cream to go with them. And not the crappy lowfat kind. The deluxe Haagen Daz brand with real cream and flecks of vanilla bean."
Self-described as the Voice of the Internet, Ubi differentiates itself from Siri and Google Now in the following ways:
- It's highly plastic--teach it new skills and it will learn them.
- Ubi works both at home and on your smartphone.
- Ubi is not linked to a single user, but can be bossed around by everyone in your household.
- The mini computer can translate voice commands into action across dozens of different Internet-connected devices.
- You can still talk to Ubi when your phone's in your pocket. [Note: I recently found out it's possible to talk to girls you went out with once but whose arms you decided were a little to flabby for you this way too.]
Ubi runs on Android OS and uses a pair of on-board processors, plus voice recognition, speech triggering, and text-to-speech to translate and carry out its masters' commands. Follow the link below to learn more about Ubi's capabilities and tech, as well as to place an order for your own.
