Moccamaster KBG Coffee Brewer
The Dutch-made Moccamaster KBG* coffee maker isn't the most visually stunning brewer out there - have you seen this cold drip maker? - but it is pretty nice to look at. And, probably more important to Moccamaster masterminds, Technivorm, the visuals here serve a thoughtful and calibrated purpose.
All Moccamaster models kinda look like their post-mounted water reservoirs are a LEGO minifig standing sideways and hovring the brew basket over the carafe while it drips out your coffee. In other words, you see 3 distinct areas of brewing action. From a functional standpoint, this design enables the KBG to isolate and enhance the components' individual functions.
The brew basket has an automatic drip-stop mechanism that Technivorm says will cut off the flow of coffee as soon as you pull the carafe away. When in place, the carafe sits over a hot plate they've engineered with an independent heating element that "rolls" heat into brewed coffee to maintain the same, even taste from first to final cup. You have your choice of hot plate holding temperature too - 175 or 185 degrees F. The hot plate shuts off automatically after 100 minutes.
The second heat source, a copper boiling element, heats water fast, but in a controlled manner, maintaining a brewing temperature between 196 and 205 degrees F (apparently necessary for a "coffee soluble extraction.") From start to finish it takes the KBG 6 minutes to brew a 40-ounce pot of coffee, after which the boiling element automatically switches off.
The Moccamaster KBG is one of Technivorm's mid-size brewers, with both smaller and larger capacity options available. I like this one though because it also comes in Brick Red. And Copper. And Yellow Pepper. 17 colors in all to choose from.
*Yeah, I'd rename this Moccamaster model to something that doesn't look so much like "KGB" too.
