IKEA Death Star Lamp
No, IKEA didn't make a Death Star Lamp. IKEA made a lamp that looks like it's exploding when turned on, which artist and Star Wars fan Zsolti Belak hand-painted to look like a Death Star, because that is what every single person who sees it in its original "IKEA PS 2014 Pendant Lamp" form thinks of while looking at it. So, in a way, Belak did the obvious.
But I also think he did what IKEA was begging people like him to do. I mean, they make the lamp in matte white, the perfect canvas for altering, up-leveling, and turning into something they couldn't themselves without dealing with expensive licensing fees and extensive approval processes. They even go so far as to say the PS 2014's designer took inspiration for the lamp from sci-fi flicks and video games.
Of course, not everyone who buys the IKEA Pendant Lamp will spend 15 hours gravity airbrushing and acrylic painting it into a Death Star Lamp like Belak has, but that is clearly its highest and best use. And a terrific way for IKEA to say, May the 4th be with you, without owing Disney a penny.
