Guy Laramee redefines the term "bookworm" with his extraordinary sculptural landscapes carved from encyclopedias and other volumes of formidable stature and heft. Mountains, canyons, meadows, Jordanian rock temples, all rush to life with artistry intricate and awe-inspiring enough to make me want to buy a set of Britannicas to hack up myself the next time the Jehovah's Witnesses come 'round selling them. I wonder if Laramee could make a Fangorn Forest out of my Tolkien box set. I wonder why some people are born with great vision and talent, while others are born just...alive and waiting for a teat to suck on.
Some of Laramee's book sculptures are for sale in a trio of art galleries in the US, Canada, and England. Seattle's Foster/White Gallery currently offers about a dozen tunneled paper creations at prices ranging from $2,000 to $7,000. Be sure to check out Laramee's own Website as well for a complete gallery of his work, which also includes non-book-based sculptures, paintings, and 3D explorations.
